Choirs and Music

God's Free Spirits Xmas
With about 200 people participating in four choirs at Highlands, music is an important part of the church. You can sit back and listen. Or join one of the choirs—a great way to get to know people! You can also join the “Praise Band” that plays monthly. Or you can join the “summer choir”—a totally impromptu experience.

We are blessed at Highlands to have talented musicians and music leaders who share the joy that music can bring to us all. Four choirs for different ages are active, and you can join at any time during the year (with the exception of the Eight Deadly Sins group). You don’t have to know how to read music to enjoy being part of one of the choirs.

God’s Free Spirits

A choir for children age 4 years to Grade 3. Practices happen on Thursdays from 6:30-7:00 pm from September through May. God’s Free Spirits sing once a month at the Sunday morning worship service and provide music leadership for the 4:30 pm Christmas Eve Pageant.

For information contact Jeannie Denault, Choir Director.

Genesis Too

Also known as GII, this is for young people in Grades 4-12. Practices are held Thursdays from 6-7:30 pm. Genesis Too sings on the second and fourth Sunday morning worship service each month between September and May. Once every spring, this lively group leads the entire service—a real highlight of the church year! See photos of the Genesis II Choir Trip to Victoria May 1, 2016. Spirit Singers

Ranging in age from 18 to their 90s, this group of 90 or more voices sings at almost every Sunday morning worship service. Focus is on a contemporary repertoire, usually in four parts. You don’t have to know how to read music to join. Rehearsals are most Thursday evenings during the school year from 8-9:30 pm. The Spirit Singers also sings at special events such as Lighting Up the Village in December, benefit concerts, memorial services as requested and Christmas Eve services. They also lead one complete music-filled Sunday worship service in the spring. Come on out for a practice—it’s a great way to meet people.

For information contact Gillian Irwin, Choir Director.

Eight Deadly Sins

The Deadlies, as they are known at Highlands, is an a capella young men’s singing group led by Noel Hollett. They sing about once a month during Highlands’ Sunday morning worship service. New members are sought through audition. Noel can be reached at (604) 929-6925.

Play an Instrument?

There’s lots of opportunities for instrumental participation. The “Praise band” adds music once a month to Sunday services. There’s also a Handbell Ensemble, led by Rosalind Hollett, that performs at Christmas and Easter.

If you’re interested in any of these musical activities, contact Geordie Roberts, Highlands’ Music Coordinator.
