When I was in the looooooooooong discernment process to become a minister (long on my part because there MUST be SOMETHING ELSE I was supposed to do), I remember attending some kind of conference where there were a bunch of already-minted and experienced ministers. One of them told me about his ‘call story.’
This was a thing apparently. I had no idea. He shared this really emotional story about God appearing to him. You know the kind where a bright light shines, sound disappears, the world stands still.
Well, that convinced me that I was definitely not supposed to be a minister. That had never happened to me.
Yet here I am.
What I now know is that not all of us get a mountain top call or conversion or transformation. Some of us plod along, hoping we’re doing right by God; and inch by inch we are transformed.
Sometimes we invite God in and pray for change and wonder why God has passed us by; unaware God is there, making change.
This Sunday we will explore the dramatic, shining light, fantastical story of the apostle Paul’s conversion from someone determined to shut down the Jesus movement to its biggest evangelist.
Maybe we’ll see ourselves in the drama of it all, or maybe we’ll see ourselves in one of the smaller details. Both are God at work. Both are God’s desire to grow us into who God wants us to be.
