Minister’s Musing May 16,2025

I’m speechless that we are at the May long weekend. It feels like we whizzed through Lent and that Easter happened ages ago. Next month the United Church marks its 100th anniversary, and it feels like only last month we were dreaming about that day ‘next year’ when we’d have something ready for the 100th. This year’s advent calendar is even creeping onto the staff meeting agenda already.

What’s happening?

I want to dig my heels into the galaxy, grab onto the side of the world and say “slow down!!!”

I wonder if that’s at all what it felt like for those new disciples in the book of Acts ... everything happening so fast.

This Sunday we explore Peter’s vision in which God invites everyone to the table. That was news to these followers - they thought they knew who was in and who was out. It was only after much urging on the Spirit’s part that their hearts opened to see the benefit and joy of grand inclusion.

Sometimes these days, I can feel down when my heart has opened too much to the news of more and more groups or countries or entities wanting to circle wagons, build fences, exclude and shun. There are more two minute sound bytes dedicated to them than to the groups or countries or entities wanting to serve, feed, include, build … love.

Peter’s vision is clear and he is shown it three times: the Holy Spirit falls upon everyone, not just “us.”

See you Sunday,

Julie.
