Ministers Musing 6th Feb, 2026 - Rev Julie Lees

You are, I am, we are, they are.

“You are the salt of the earth.” I am the salt of the earth. We are the salt of the earth. They are the salt of the earth.

“You are the light of the world.” I am the light of the world. We are the light of the world. They are the light of the world.

Jesus is clear in Matthew (5: 13-20). It’s us. Right now. As we are.

It’s not “you can be the salt of the earth if you …” Or, “you might be the light of the world if you …”

No. You are. Right now. As is.

Hallelujah!

There’s nothing more or less we have to do to be the salt of the earth or the light of the world.
Now that we’ve established that’s what we are – what do we do about it?

There is a call that comes with being salt and light. We are to add flavour. We are to shine light. We will all do this differently (for some it will be a kind word, for others a deep prayer life, and still others peaceful protests). And we all do this to varying degrees (for some of us we might be having a hard time finding the on switch for our light, while some of us are in a moment of enhancing recipes for the kingdom of God at every turn).

Wherever we are at today, we still hold our identity as Christ’s own. We are salt and we are light. And the world needs both.

Blessings, Julie
